An early 19th century violin by Johannes Mahrer, 1830
...auctioned at $1 with no reserve!
A rare early 19th century violin made by master maker Johannes Mahrer. The violin is labelled Johannes Mahrer fecit Wels anno 1830, the label is very likely original (the date and parts of the first name have been rewritten by the person who did the restoration). The bodylength is 35.7 cm, the size is a fullsize. The violin is a 100% handmade antique piece, top restored and in full playing condition.
The top is made of fine grained spruce, the two piece back of plain maple. The ribs are mildly flamed. The varnish is of a dark brown color, the varnish is not the original varnish. The edgework is neatly made with highly accentuated edges. The elegant scroll is especially beautiful, exhibiting italian elegance and a strong personality.
The violin has had a large, costly high grade restoration (a repairwork with a value of thousands of dollars). In the course of the repairwork, both the top and bottom blocks have been replaced. Cracks to the top were expertly repaired, a soundpost crack beautifully and perfectly patched. The pegbox patch is probably a later repair. Inside, the violin is well made with beautifully fitted corner blocks and full linings. The bridge and soundpost are new, a set of fine quality and well fitted ebony pegs is also new. The violin is in full playing condition!
This violin has a truly exceptional and highly sophisticated sound: its tone is warm and medium-mellow, with a mature and strong dominant medium-dark mellow character in the lower ranges and clear innocent sweetness in the higher ranges. The sound is wonderfully balanced and even over the strings. What a beautiful sounding instrument!
